What is a virus?

A computer virus is a form of malicious software – also referred to as malware.

The forms of malware that anti-virus solutions protect against include the following:

Viruses – a small program that attaches itself to another program or document and replicates with the potential to cause damage.

Worms – specifically engineered to make extensive use of e-mail to spread them rapidly.

Trojans – programs that pretend to be something harmless but have a damaging or otherwise malicious intent.

Zombies – programs that install themselves on PCs and remain dormant until an external event triggers them into action. This could do damage to your PC, steal your personal information and send it to an unauthorized e-mail account, or even open up access to your PC remotely.

How do anti-virus solutions work?

Anti-virus solutions provide comprehensive protection by detecting viruses, worms, Trojans and zombies and disabling or removing them from your system.

How do viruses spread?

Viruses today are typically spread via e-mail, but can also be spread by sharing diskettes, network drives, or Internet downloads. Viruses cannot spread on their own; they must be triggered by someone to cause damage.

What kind of damage can viruses cause?

The type of damage viruses can cause varies dramatically. Some of them do a great deal of damage to files, even destroy the contents of a hard drive, while others install programs intended to corrupt or steal information from your PC.

How does CA Anti-Virus provide automated updates?

CA Anti-Virus is configured to automatically check and update virus signatures via a standard Internet connection. This process is completely automated and does not require user intervention.

What is a firewall?

A firewall is an important first line of defense for computer security. A firewall is software or hardware that acts as a barrier between your PC and the Internet. It prevents unauthorized access to your PC and hides your Internet-connected PC from view. All information leaving or entering your PC must pass through the firewall. It ultimately helps keep hackers away from your personal and confidential data.

What kinds of threats do firewalls protect against?

Firewalls protect against hackers and online intruders who steal personal and confidential data that could lead to identity theft. Firewalls inspect each “packet” of data as it arrives on either side of the firewall – inbound from the Internet or outbound from your computer. The firewall determines whether or not it should be allowed to pass or if it should be blocked.

If I already have anti-virus and anti-spyware software, do I need a firewall?

Yes. CA Personal Firewall stops unauthorized access and hides your PC from possible hacker attacks. Firewalls protect you from things that anti-virus software and anti-spyware software are not designed to find.

Anti-virus software detects and removes viruses, while anti-spyware software detects and removes spyware, adware, and other non-viral malicious code. Accordingly, CA Personal Firewall is the perfect complement to anti-virus and anti-spyware software, providing a key component of a multilayered security strategy.

What are the features of CA Personal Firewall?

CA Personal Firewall offers simple-to-use yet powerful features:
  • Pre-configured Security Settings give you optimal protection right out of the box.
  • Application Control informs you when programs attempt to access the Internet, and let you allow or deny access.
  • Automatic Network Detection identifies the addition of a new network and ensures proper protection for your local network or router configuration.
  • Ad Blocking cuts out annoying pop-up and pop-under ads, letting you surf in peace.
  • ID Theft Protection allows you to store sensitive personal information, alerts you when it is about to leave your PC through the Internet or e-mail, and allows you to block the transmission, if desired.
  • E-mail Protection identifies and quarantines potentially harmful e-mail attachments and prevents mass-mailing worms from propagating.
  • Mobile Code Protection allows you to block malicious or untrusted mobile code (JavaScript, Active X, VBS Script, etc.)

What is Spyware?

Spyware includes a wide variety of non-viral applications that are typically loaded onto your PC without your knowledge. Spyware can steal your personal information, switch your homepage, re-direct your Web searches, display annoying ads, slow your PC to a crawl, or even control it remotely.

How do I get infected with spyware?

Spyware can enter your PC through everyday Web browsing, unauthorized software downloads, peer-to-peer file swapping, e-mail attachments, instant messaging and chat sessions, bundled with legitimate software, hacker Website downloads, and “drive-by” installs from Websites.

Why do I need anti-spyware software?

Spyware can lead to anything from PC crashes to increased spam to identity theft. These threats are rapidly proliferating and represent a major security and privacy risk.

If I already have anti-virus software, do I need anti-spyware software?

Your anti-virus protection is important – it detects and removes viral threats. However, your PC can be infected with other dangers such as spyware. Anti-spyware software is designed to stop these threats, which have unique properties that can remain hidden in your PC and cause serious problems.

Is my Webmail account protected by Anti-Spam?

Currently, Webmail applications are not protected by Anti-Spam, but will be by Fall 2007.

What is Spam?

Spam is the common term for junk e-mail or unwanted messages sent to one’s e-mail account.

How do I get Spam?

Spammers often use bulk e-mail programs to send out their unsolicited messages to lists of e-mail addresses that are often collected without the recipient’s knowledge. There are several ways spammers can obtain these e-mail addresses:

Harvesting from Websites – Most companies list e-mail addresses and contact information on their Websites. Spammers use web-crawlers to search for these e-mail addresses located on Web pages.

Mailing Lists – Many people sign up for mailing lists for newsletters, news alerts, coupons, special offers, and other interests. However, spammers can also sign up for these mailing lists and obtain e-mail addresses.

Usenet Posting – Spammers can also use bots to cruise newsgroups on Usenet in order to collect e-mail addresses.

Coincidental – Your e-mail address may be unique to your ISP, but it may also be used by several other people using different ISPs. Spammers use the front part of the e-mail address and change the ISP name to create a list of several e-mail addresses.

Can’t I get rid of spam e-mails by ‘unsubscribing’?

No. Any response to spam e-mails confirms the accuracy of your e-mail address and may result in even more spam messages.

Are there laws to stop spam?

The ‘Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing Act’ (CAN-SPAM) took effect in the United States in January 2004. The Act places certain restrictions on what bulk mail senders can do. If spammers comply, they can send their unsolicited e-mails. The CAN-SPAM Act also does not apply to e-mail sent from outside the United States, even though other countries around the world have some measures in place.

Do CA Parental Controls work on Macintosh PCs?

Currently, CA Parental Controls only run on Windows operating systems.

How do I block all Internet access with CA Parental Controls for only a part of the day/week?

CA Parental Controls allow you to define each user's allowed time to access the Internet. You can select the days/hours during which Internet access won't be allowed by going to the Access Time Table tab of the member, and select the time to restrict access to the Internet. You can also select a quota of browsing time, which will be counted when the user is allowed access to the Internet. During times that are allowed, the user will have filtered access to the Internet according to the policy set up for that person.

Do CA Parental Controls filter pornographic e-mails?

CA Parental Controls only restrict access to Websites. If an e-mail contains a link to a pornographic site, the site will be filtered once the link in the e-mail is clicked on. If the e-mail contains Web information that is retrieved upon opening the message, the Website content will be filtered.

How can I block/allow sites that CA Parental Controls don’t block/allow?

Individual sites can be added to the Custom Site List to be blocked or allowed and override the CA Parental Control engine. The site’s address can either be added as a URL or to be considered as an entire domain. This means all sub domains and internal pages of that domain will automatically be included.

Does the CA Parental Control function start automatically?

The Parental Control feature starts automatically each time your computer is started, even if the system tray icon is not there (when the product is in hidden mode). Also after a restart, the Parental Control feature is automatically running and filtering according to the Starting User settings.

How do I add more users to the Parental Control feature?

Adding users is very easy. In order to add more members or to Edit/Remove any member, complete the following steps:
  1. Open the Parental Control menu and select the Preferences option.
  2. Go to ‘Manager Members’ tab
  3. Click on the Add button
  4. Set the Member name and password
  5. A new member is created with the Internet filtering policy inherited from the Default User.
  6. You can now edit the member's settings by clicking on the member's image
  7. Next, you can define this member’s settings (Image, Password, Web-Filters and Access Time Table)
  8. You can change the Member settings any time you like

What does Default User mean?

A Default User is a user that comes with predefined "factory" settings. The Parental Control feature starts with a Default User. This user will not be required to enter a password to log in to the Parental Control feature, and therefore should be defined with the most restrictive Internet filtering policy.

When creating a new user, the new user inherits the settings of the Default User, which can be modified. If you have more then one user in the system, you can make any of the users to be the Default User.

How do I temporarily disable the Parental Control feature?

When using profiles:
  1. Open the CA Parental Control menu and select the Log In option
  2. Select the Administrator
  3. Enter the Administrator password
  4. Now the Parental Control feature will work under Free Access with no filtering at all
If you have not enabled profiles:
  1. Open the CA Parental Control menu and select the Turn Off option
  2. Enter the Administrator password
  3. Now the Parental Control feature will work under Free Access with no filtering at all
